He wondered how many times he had contemplated leaving. He would not disagree with her decision but what would leaving solve. He wondered if it was her suitcases closing or his heart breaking. He had tried so hard to make it work but how do you work on something that is seen as suicide.  Val took the last sip of his beer and walked to the kitchen.

Nidia stood over the bed… their bed. After two years, something told her to pack and go. She was tired of crying. She knew if she had categorized her shed tears they would be rivers. Thousands of rivers that she swam, due to different reasons and situations, all because of him. He claimed to feel her pain. He claimed he shed as many tears as she did. She couldn’t handle him drinking,. She just couldn’t deal with the worrying and she as suppose to be his girlfriend not his savior.

Val debated on grabbing another beer. His drinking has pushed her to the edge. She laughed when he suggested one more chance. He knew she would turn him down. He never hit her but his words left scars deeper then he would ever know. He wished he could help her find the good times. They existed it was just that the yesterdays were not for sale. They were stuck in the painful present. Tomorrow was not his to promise to her.

So if she wasn’t his savior, then why was it hard to leave? She knew he had flaws. He made up for missing Valentine’s day. He was smashed and passed out before she finished getting ready. He wanted to be her everything. But he didn’t realize how much he needed her as well. She was his wine that he couldn’t get enough of. But that was before the fortified stuff took over. Did he deserve one more chance?

Val shook his head. They were hardly ever apart but he was drunk most of the time. He never realized she was happy or down. He was at the bar drunk on her birthday. He was passed out in bed when she blew the candles out. He could stop drinking. He just needed to realize what he would lose. Vince did not think too kindly of alcoholics. He just wanted Nidia to stay and he would attempt to get sober.

Val closed the refrigerator. He noticed Nidia by the door.  She glanced his way. Val noticed how much older she looked. But there was something else he noticed. She had a look of compassion. He wanted her to say something. Nidia took a breath as she moved closer to him. She took him into her arms. It was not an easy thing to say when she could show what love could do

I guess this time you're really leaving

I heard your suitcase say goodbye

And as my broken heart lies bleeding

You say true love is suicide

You say you've cried a thousand rivers

And now you're swimming for the shore

You left me drowning in my tears

And you won't save me anymore

Now I'm praying to God you'll give me one more chance, girl

I'll be there for you

These five words I swear to you

When you breathe I want to be the air for you

I'll be there for you

I'd live and I'd die for you

Steal the sun from the sky for you

Words can't say what love can do

I'll be there for you

I know you know we've had some good times

Now they have their own hiding place

I can promise you tomorrow

But I can't buy back yesterday

And Baby you know my hands are dirty

But I wanted to be your valentine

I'll be the water when you get thirsty, baby

When you get drunk, I'll be the wine

I'll be there for you

These five words I swear to you

When you breathe I want to be the air for you

I'll be there for you

I'd live and I'd die for you

Steal the sun from the sky for you

Words can't say what love can do

I'll be there for you

Solo

And I wasn't there when you were happy

I wasn't there when you were down

I didn't mean to miss your birthday, baby

I wish I'd seen you blow those candles out

I'll be there for you

These five words I swear to you

When you breathe I want to be the air for you

I'll be there for you

I'd live and I'd die for you

Steal the sun from the sky for you

Words can't say what a love can do

I'll be there for you
