She sat in the darkened room and watched the moonlight that streaked through the blinds play over his face as he slept in the bed just a few feet away from her. It was the ‘bed’ rather then the man in it that had her mind ticking over time because it symbolised the common ground that she and Randy shared. That common ground being – Great sex.
Sure it was just a bed in yet another dinky hotel room, but it was the one thing they shared. Some nights they didn’t even talk. It was like some sixth sense that called to them telling of the need within that only the other could quench. And then in the morning he would be gone – Or she would be… depending on whoever woke first. She didn’t care. He was a welcome distraction. Her only distraction.
It hurt to be so ignorant on the outside when inside she was still on the hell mouth fighting the good fight. That was why she hadn’t moved on from here because Randy was her escape. Her link out of the nightmare. He would help her not to think with his presence, his words and his body and because if she didn’t use him as an outlet she might just give up on life.
Sometimes she felt so dead inside that she couldn’t hear herself think. She craved peace at almost any price – Even the price of non-existence. Everyone she remembered, everyone she had loved, everyone she had called family was gone. She was all that was left.
She couldn’t give up though no matter how much she wanted too. The world still needed her even if they didn’t know it. Getting to her feet Dawn donned her jacket, pushed a wooden stake up into her sleeve and then another down the back of her jeans before she leaned down to gently touch her lips to Randy’s forehead.
At the door she paused to looked back. Yep, she thought before closing the door behind her. The bed was the only thing they shared. And nothing else.
