Summary: Eve finds the truth within a letter
Eve sat and went through some old papers that were in his desk. She was surprised to come across a paper with faded ink. She noticed her name and a smile came to her face. He wrote she was his one and only. He knew no one else could take her place or at least that is what he said. Eve sighed as she realized that he did not know how to be truthful. He did not use his pretty words to flatter her anymore. Eve exhaled as she crumpled up the paper. She was letting it go because his words did not come from his heart.
Eve dusted the desk and placed pictures of her and the kids. They had tried but were unsuccessful to have children of their own. Eve suggested they adopt and he reluctantly agreed. Namiah and Paul were the most perfect and beautiful children. Eve hoped it would renew his commitment to her but it did not. It seemed to actually push him further and further away.
Eve moved to the closet and began to move his things from there as well. She moved to her knees to really get into the bottom of it. She pulled out his guitar. She felt the tears as they pooled in her eyes. It was the first of many things that they splurged on. She smiled as she recalled him singing and playing the guitar under the stars on the back porch. Eve stood up and glanced out the window. Namiah and Paul played in the backyard. She glanced at DeShona as she played in the crib. She ran her fingers over the strings. The dust flew in the air as time demonstrated no one was there to play it. She was no longer his brown eyed girl or anyone’s sweetheart. But the sadness lifted for Eve as she realized that his heart wasn’t in it.
Eve moved the boxes by the door. She stood up as she rubbed her back. She remembered when they first met. She was working at the Wal-Mart stocking. She was amazed as he stopped shopping to help her. They had a late dinner and hit it off from there. Eve began to fit into his life. She thought he was the love of her life. She stayed home and was the happy homemaker. She occasionally traveled. She received her worst memory of all. She wanted to call and let him know she was pregnant. She felt all her emotions leave her when she heard Lilian answer his cell. All her special memories and good intentions lead her into a state of foolishness. She soon realized what a state of contradiction she was in when she thought that their love was true.
Eve wiped her forehead and felt something bizarre. She looked and noticed her wedding ring. It has been there since June 27, 1999. She stood before the minister, their families and God. She swore till death do them part. She no longer looked at it as the prized possession just a trinket she had gotten along the way. She called in the kids. She wanted to get rid of the ring but she was not the one who broke their promise. Eve did not take it too hard. She realized it did not come from his heart. Anything true could not come from Dwayne Johnson’s heart… even the letter she found.
I found a letter that you wrote me
It said I was your one and only
And you would never ever leave my
loving arms
But the truth is all that matters
Your pretty words no longer flatter
‘Cause I know they didn’t come from
your heart
I found your guitar in the closet
I remember when you brought it
And how you serenaded me under the
stars
Now there’s no one here to play it
You changed your tune, I hate to say it
But the songs didn’t come from your
heart
In your heart, I believed I’d found the
love of my dreams
I hoped my search was through
But now, all I’m finding are memories
that remind me
What a fool I was, to think it was true
I found your ringer still on my finger
It’s been there since we saw the
preacher
And swore to him, in front of God,
death do us part
It’s just a fourteen-carat trinket
But like my promise, I will keep it
Even though it didn’t come from your
heart
I found a letter that you wrote me
