~Denotes song lyrics~
She couldn't sleep, thoughts of
what had happened tonight still
playing on her mind. He had been hurt, and hurt badly... so bad
he
had been rushed to the hospital... and she had been at his
side
holding his hand, whispering soothing words in his ear as he lay
unconscious in the ambulance.
Thought's of how serious his injuries
could be filled her mind leading
her to confess to his still form how much she cared for him,
adored
him... loved him for so long from afar.
Tonight being the first time she
had voiced her true feelings to him
hoping in some way that he would hear her, come back to her...
and dared she hope maybe love her back in return.
She had sat in the hospital
waiting room till the early hours of the
morning, praying silently for him to wake up... and the joy she
had
felt when the nurse had come to tell her that he was indeed
conscious though very drowsy in his concussion.
He had looked so helpless in the
stark white room, the sheets pulled
up under his chin, his long blonde hair fanned out over the
hospital
pillows.
The happiness she felt at seeing
him there knowing that he was
going to be okay shone through her eyes and smile and then he
looked up at her, his eyes glazing over as his hand reached out
from
beneath the bed sheet to grasp hers, his fingers intertwining
with her
own, drawing her closer to the bed.
Then everything changed, her
heart shattering into a million pieces
when he whispered, "Lita."
She had left his hospital room
not long after leaving Lita's name and
number at the nurses
station.
Lita was now on RAW so she
probably wouldn't get the footage of
what had happened last night until sometime today and no
matter
how much it hurt her, Lita was who he had called for... so
Lita he
would get.
She didn't have to wait long
before she saw the red head getting
off the elevator, her faithful best friend Jeff Hardy at her
side.
She watched from her hiding
place, saw the nurse looking in the
waiting room for her thankful now that she hadn't given the nurse
her real name. Not that that would have been a problem at the
time seeing as the nurse didn't know who her patient lying in
the
hospital bed was.
A tear rolled down her cheek as
she watched them enter Edge's
hospital room only moving from her hiding place once the door had
closed behind them. She forced herself not to look back as she
made her way to the elevator, silently whispering her goodbye
to
the man she loved.
Now here she was sitting on the
balcony of her hotel room with her
guitar in her hand, the one thing that brought her comfort
during the
long nights when she couldn't sleep, nights like this one.
She closed her eyes allowing her
fingers to strum over the strings as
she emptied her heart in song.
~Let me sleep...~
~...for when I sleep I dream that
you are here...~
~...your mine... and all my fears
are left behind~
~I float on air, the nitengale sings gentle lullabyes~
~So let me close my eyes...~
~...and sleep, a chance to dream~
~so I can see the face I long to
touch...~
~...to kiss... for only dreams
can bring me this~
~So let... the moon...~
~Shine softly on the boy I long
to see~
~And maybe when he dreams...~
~...he'll dream of me~
~I hide beneath the clouds and
whisper to the evening stars~
~They tell me love is just a
dream away...~
~...dream away~
~So let... the moon...~
~Shine softly on the boy I long
to see~
~And maybe when he dreams...~
~...he'll dream
of me...~
She got up then, her tears
running down her face as she walked the
few steps to the doorway, stopping only to look back out at
the
coming dawn.
"I love you, Edge."
Stephanie whispered before stepping inside her
room and closing the door.
Two balconies below her a man sat
listening to her song, her
saddened words pulling at his heart strings so bad he longed to
know who the singer was.
Never had he heard so much
emotion and depth in one piece of
music. Thankful now that he had accompanied his two friends
when
they had gotten the message that Edge was in hospital, his
friends
having gone straight there while he had looked for them a hotel
room, which was a task in itself considering it was early
dawn, but
he had prevailed.
And hearing the girl put her
heart into that song made it all the
more better, he envied the man whoever he was for evoking such
love from a woman.
His mind made up Chris Jericho
looked out at the rising sun vowing
to find out who this mysterious woman was.

~Denotes song lyrics~
~Welcome to the planet~
~Welcome to existence~
~Everyone’s here~
~Everyone’s here~
~Everybody's watching you now~
~Everybody waits for you now~
~What happens next~
~What happens next~
She stood behind the curtain at
the top of the ramp waiting for her
cue and watched as Edge introduced Lita to the fan's as his
new
manager. As General Manager of Smack Down she was suppose to go
down
there and welcome Lita to the smack down roster.
How she had made it through these
past few weeks she would
never know, throwing herself into work with her main focus
being
to get Lita to jump ship. It took a bit of negotiating
behind the
scenes on her part but she had achieved it, although Jeff and Chris
deciding to follow in the red heads footsteps hadn't been in the
plan
she wasn't about to say no, this way she got three for the
price of
one.
He had burst into her office when
he had found out sweeping her
up in his arms in gratitude, even going so far as to invite
her out to
dinner with them to celebrate. She had declined of course, there
was no reason to make it even more harder then it was to be
around him... and putting herself in a position where she would
have to see Edge and Lita together was not something she would
willingly do.
But now her job, the fans, the
writers all called for her to do just
that... closing her eyes as she mentally counted to ten, now
was not
the time to be wearing her heart on her sleeve.
~I dare you to move~
~I dare you to move~
~I dare you to lift yourself up
off the floor~
~I dare you to move~
~I dare you to move~
~Like today never happened~
~Today never happened before~
She stepped through the curtain
and stood at the top of the ramp,
the crowd went wild as she was put in the spot light. All
traces of
what she had been thinking backstage disappearing from her
face
as like clock work she fell into character.
Down at ringside she could see
the smiling faces of Edge and Lita
and forced her own smile to stay in place as they met her
gaze.
She saw Edge move to the ropes
opening them for her as she
climbed the steel steps, being very careful not to get too close
to him
as she slipped through at once finding herself face to face
with
Lita's out stretched hand.
The roar of the crowd deafened
her as she looked down at Lita's
show of friendship the feeling she got from that small action
freeing
her of any discomfort she may have had for this woman as she
accepted Lita's out stretched hand.
~Welcome to the fire~
~Welcome to resistance~
~The tension is here~
~The tension is here~
~Between who you are and who you
could be~
~Between how it is and how it
should be~
She was handed the mic and her voice sounded far away to her
ears as she welcomed Lita on behalf of everyone backstage,
ringside and out in the stands to the Smack Down roster, waiting
for the roar of the crowd to lesson before she went on to
call the
two other crowd favourites who had
joined along with Lita. Her
smile brightening her features as she looked out into the
crowd, the
continual cheers alleviating the coldness that had formed inside
her
as Jeff and Chris made their way down to the ring.
Allowing the four friends to
greet each other she tentatively stepped
back to watch as they all embraced hoping the envy that crept
up
inside her didn't outwardly show.
Lita had to be the luckiest woman
she knew, yeah sure she had
money... but what good was money without friends who cared
about you... without Edge.
~I dare you to move~
~I dare you to move~
~I dare you to lift yourself up
off the floor~
~I dare you to move~
~I dare you to move~
~Like today never happened~
~Today never happened~
Knowing her time in the ring was
up she slipped back out of the ring
and slowly made her way up the ramp. Head down, barely seeing
or acknowledging anyone she passed in the hallway her whole
focus being on making it back to her office before the tears
fell.
Once she was behind her closed
office door she allowed herself to
feel, allowed herself to open up, allowed herself to just be
Stephanie.
'This was a milestone' she told
herself, 'a simple trial life had put in
front of her, she would conquer this.'
~Maybe redemption's a story to
tell~
~Maybe forgiveness is right where
you fell~
~Where can you run to escape from
yourself~
~Where you gonna go~
~Where you gonna go~
~Salvation is here~
Edge walked with the others down
the hallway towards their
locker room,
singing but Edge's mind couldn't keep focused on his friends
story.
Knowing
that is if he actually found out who this one was, Edge was
sure his
friends interest only stemmed from the fact that she was a
challenge
to him, something he wanted but couldn't have.
Thoughts of Stephanie entered his
head then although he didn't
know why... she was one person he knew who 'did' have
everything she ever wanted.
"I'll go get us some
drinks," Jeff offered once they were all back
inside their locker room.
more of lovey and dovey I can take." He said motioning to Edge
and Lita with his thumb then quickly ducked as a towel went
flying
over his head, the sound of his laughter reaching them even
though
he had closed the door.
~I dare you to move~
~I dare you to move~
~I dare you to lift yourself up
off the floor~
~I dare you to move~
~I dare you to move~
~Like today never happened~
~Today never happened before~
Edge sat down next to Lita on the
bench and leaned back on the
closed lockers smiling down at her when she laid her head in his
lap
and looked up at him.
"I wanted to thank you for
being at the hospital with
absently running his fingers through her hair watching the
emotions
play over her face at his ministrations.
"Anytime
Edge... that’s what friends are for right? Besides when we
got that call from the hospital-"
"Call?" He cut in looking confused. "You mean you didn't
ride with
me in the ambulance?"
**
Jeff and Chris stood beside the
vending machine deciding on their
choices... so far they had four bottles of water, some peanut
M&M's
and an extra large cherry ripe and were currently in an
argument
over whether to get skittles or snakes when Chris heard the
sound of
someone strumming a guitar.
Intrigued he stepped out into the
hallway honing his ears in on the
sound, allowing his feet to guide him to where the music was
coming
from. His legs nearly buckling beneath him as he heard the
sweet
voice of his mystery woman, her voice again filled with so much
emotion.
He reached out to open the door
when the name emblazoned on it
stopped him. 'It couldn't be' he thought as he lifted his fingers
to run
them over the sign that read 'Stephanie McMahon - SDGM'

~Denotes song lyrics~
~Well I can't ever really
believe~
~No one was sent to get me~
~I feel like I'm being erased~
~No one got left here~
~Well I'm all... alone~
~No one was sent to get me~
~Well I'm all... alone~
~No one got left here~
~But I'm fine...~
~No one got left here~
~And I'm fine...~
~No one got left here~
His mind was on fire with
questions, questions he knew Lita couldn't
answer... couldn't or wouldn't? He mentally admonished himself
for
that thought. Lita would never hold out on him, they were more
than a couple... they were best friends and she loved him.
But why did he have these
memories of a girl being in the
ambulance with him, whispering comforting words in his ear, words
of love and longing, he had felt safe there as if everything
would be
okay as long as she was by his side... but if it wasn't
Lita... then who?
'Today he would find out' he
thought as he walked through the
doors of Mercy General, the hospital he had been taken too that
night.
He walked down the hospital
hallways with thoughts of Lita on his
mind. He couldn't believe he was doing this behind her back,
but the
feeling he got when he thought about who had been with him in
the ambulance was too strong for him to just leave it be.
Maybe Lita
had been right in saying that maybe he had dreamed it all...
he had
been knocked unconscious for nearly six hours... but his
insides told
him she was more than just a guardian angel... she was his
whole.
~I can't even breathe when I see~
~The pictures sent without you~
~Well I feel like I’m being
erased~
~No one got left here~
~Well I'm all... alone~
~No one was sent to get me~
~Well I'm all... alone~
~No one got left here~
~But I'm fine...~
~No one got left here~
~and I'm fine...~
~No one got left here~
'Oh god... there she is...' he
thought as she entered the hotel lobby,
her thoughts elsewhere as she fished around in her bag for
something.
'Breathe
her. Ever since he had found out she was the mysterious woman
behind the voice he couldn't get her off his mind. Who would
think?
That he Chris Jericho, the first
Undisputed Champion of the WWE
would go all weak at the knee's at the sight of one Stephanie
McMahon.
"Hold the elevator!"
'What the hell was he doing?' his mind
screamed as he stepped inside the elevator sending her his most
charming smile as the doors slid closed.
She returned his smile but didn't
say anything as she focused her
attention on watching the little lights above the doors light up as
they passed each floor.
"How's your day been?"
'God could he get any more
corny?'
"Fine... yours?"
"Fine." 'Okay you can stop grinning like an idiot.'
They lapsed into silence once
more and a few seconds later the
elevator came to a stop, the doors sliding open.
He watched seeing everything in
slow motion as she turned to him
with a little wave. "See you tonight." she said
before stepping off the
elevator, every step she took taking her farther and farther away
from him.
His hands reached up to stop the
doors from closing as he bolted
through the opening. "Steph!"
He saw her pause a confused look
coming over her features as she
stood waiting for him, he jogged towards her coming to a stop a
few feet away.
"You... ah... you... wanna
get coffee... sometime?"
~I'm so sick of this terrible
instinct~
~It's so hard now~
~Just to find you~
~I'm so sick of this terrible
instinct~
~It's so hard now~
~Just to find you~
Edge was sitting in the nurse’s
lounge drinking coffee and signing
autographs as he chatted away with the nurse who had tended to
him that night.
"So I'm not
dreaming..." his face took on a look of relief as his hopes
were confirmed by the nurse. "She's real?"
The nurse laughed as he suddenly
jumped up pulling her up with
him and then proceeded to lead her in a waltz around the
small
room.
"Do you remember her
name?" he asked as he deposited her back
into her chair.
"I'm sorry, I don’t..."
She said feeling more then seeing his
distress at her words. "But I only came on duty halfway
through
your stay... this is against the rules but I could check in
admin to see
who signed you in."
'To be young
and in love.' She thought the memory
of his smile
creeping back onto his face at her words imprinted on her mind as
she left him.
~I'm so sick of this terrible
instinct~
~I can only hold you~
~I'm so sick of this terrible
instinct~
~I can only find you~
"Coffee?"
"Yeah... that is if you have
time... I know being GM you must have
alot to do... and...
I... so you wanna?" 'Perfect
wishing the ground would open up and swallow him sometime in
the vicinity of... yesterday. 'I bet she's sorting through
her refusal list
right now.'
"Coffee 'Coffee' or like a
date coffee?"
'She sure wasn’t making this easy
on him,' he thought to himself
before straightening his shoulders and expelling a deep breath
he
hadn't realised he was holding.
"Ah... a
date coffee?" 'Did he just
squeak?' he cleared his throat. "I
mean... a... a date coffee."
"Oh."
~Well its fine~
~No one got left here~
~Well its fine~
~No one got left here~
~if it’s fine~
~then stay~
Edge read the form the nurse had
brought back to him, his eyes
widening as he saw the name written in black pen.
"Stephanie."
~If it's fine~
~Then stay~
~I'll be fine~
~No one got left here~
~Well its fine~
~No one got left here~
"Oh?...
was that a good oh or a bad oh?"
She mulled over his words in her
mind. 'Maybe this was a good
thing...' she thought, 'another step in her battle of getting
over Edge.'
After hearing Edge whisper Lita's name that night in the hospital she
had accepted that he was lost to her.
Chris smiled when she said the
words he wanted to hear.
"I'd like to have coffee
with you."

Stephanie looked happy as she
stood there chatting away to
Stephanie had started dating,
something which had thrown him for
a loop ever since he had found out.
He had arrived back from the
hospital in a daze after talking with
the nurse who had tended to him that night, not really
believing
that Stephanie had been with him, stayed with him, cared for
him...
confessed her love for him, yet deep down he knew that it was true.
Realization hitting him like a mac truck as he watched her smile at
some witty comment from Chris. He had been too blind to see it
then,
why hadn't he seen it?
Edge closed his eyes as her
laughter floated around the room and
he wasn't prepared for the feelings the sound of her
laughter
evoked in him, a painful expression coming to his face when he
felt
the longing within himself for that sound to be directed at
him.
"You okay?"
His eyes shot open when he heard Lita's voice beside him so lost in
his thoughts he had been oblivious to her entering the room.
"Edge?" her eyes
followed his line of sight and she smiled. "Chris is so
happy now it's amazing the change in him... who would've
thought
Stephanie would be the one to
make the king of the world's heart
go all a flutter."
'Or mine.' Edge added silently
but aloud he replied. "Yeah, who
would have guessed."
~It's all I know~
~It's all I know~
~It's all I know~
Lita looked down on him her eyes
full of laughter and love. 'I love
you' she whispered.
'I love you too, Stephanie'
Edge awoke to a semi dark room to
find once again it had all been
a dream as he turned his head to see the woman lying next
to him.
Her red hair spilling over the
pillows and across her face, he reached
out to tuck the wayward strands back behind her ear before
leaning forward to place a kiss on her cheek his whispered
apology
going unnoticed to her as she slept.
~I find peace when I'm confused~
~I find hope when I'm let down~
~Not in me ... me~
~In you... it's in you~
~I hope to lose myself for good~
~I hope to find it in the end~
~Not in me ... me... in you~
~In you~
~In you~
'I'm happy' she kept telling
herself. 'Chris loves me, it shows in every
look he gives me, every smile he sends me... every time he
touches his
lips to mine...' she gingerly turned from the balcony to stare
at the
sleeping man in her bed. 'Then why do I still feel empty?'
It had been over a month now and
though she felt warmth and
fondness for the man in her bed thoughts of another still haunted
her, drawing her from her slumber to seek the coolness and
solitude
of the balcony and her guitar. Finding peace with her
thoughts as
her fingers strummed a lingering melody up and out into the
night
and every time her fingers stilled she silently pleaded to
whoever
would listen to bring an end to her confusion and lustful
notions.
She had made her bed now she had
to lie in it. Lita was with Edge,
she was what made him happy.
She walked back inside setting
her guitar down on a chair before
slipping back into bed, Chris's sleep filled form gently moulding
himself around her, his arm curving around her waist bringing her
closer to him before she felt his lips in her hair, whispers of
'I love you'
falling from his lips.
~It's all I know~
~It's all I know~
~It's all I know~
Chris loved her... that’s all she
needed right?
"I know you do." she
whispered in replied giving in to the warmth as
she slipped into slumber. 'I know you do.'

~Hello, good morning, how you do~
~What makes your risin' sun so new~
~I could use a fresh beginning
too~
~All of my regrets are nothing
new~
~So this is a way, that I say I
need You~
~This is a way~
~This is a way~
'I'm doing it... I'm really doing
it...'
"Steph are you ready?"
"Huh?"
Vince smiled down at his only
daughter. "It's time."
"Oh..."
His brow creased when he caught
her wiping away a lone tear as it escaped her closed lids. "Steph...
honey... are you sure this is what you want?"
'NO!' her mind screamed... but
her expression showed nothing of her inner turmoil as she smiled up at her
father. "Chris is a good man... and he loves me..."
Vince returned his daughters
smile but his eyes dimmed somewhat as he realised she
had not said that she was in love with the man she was about to marry.
~That I'm learning to breathe~
~I'm learning to crawl~
~I'm finding that you and you
alone can break my fall~
~I'm living again, awake and
alive~
~I'm dying to breathe in these
abundant skies~
Stephanie smiled through her
tears with each step they took down the aisle. This passed year with Chris had
been passionate and so full of life, her love for the man standing at the alter smiling back at her had grown in abundance and she
could fully admit that she loved him... because it was the truth.
She did love him she just wasn't
in love with him.
But like all things she had
learnt over the years... nothing comes without trying... and one year later she
was ready to try.
~Hello, good morning, how you
been~
~Yesterday left my head kicked
in~
~I never, never thought that~
~I would fall like that~
~Never knew that I could hurt
this bad~
She looked a vision coming down
the aisle on her proud father's arm, her hair falling down around her face
crowning in it tiny curls while the length of it cascaded down her bare back.
Her dress form fitting, clinging
in all the right place's was held up by two thin pearl encrusted spaghetti
straps, the silk seeming endless as it fell to the floor.
Behind her veil he saw her bright
blue eyes full of tears, her eyes locked with his as they all awaited her
approach.
His gaze fell to the woman who
had preceded her and he shook his head to clear his thoughts as Lita smiled at
him.
Edge hadn't realised
his fists were clenched as he lifted one to the breast pocket of his vest
feeling the outline of the ring he held in his pocket and chanced a look
towards Chris who shuffled on his feet nervously beside him.
'This is really happening...'
~I'm learning to breathe~
~I'm learning to crawl~
~I'm finding that you and you
alone can break my fall~
~I'm living again, awake and
alive~
~I'm dying to breathe in these
abundant skies~
~These abundant skies~
~Yeah, abundant skies, yeah~
He watched as the bride and groom
stepped away from him and Lita to stand before the pastor. His mind a muddle of
emotions at it took him back to that night his whole life had changed.
The ambulance ride and how he had
felt secure and protected as if he were locked inside some air tight container
where nothing bad could touch him.
He remembered that feeling more
then anything else that night, more then awaking to find Lita by his bedside...
and more so he remembered when he had stopped feeling that way... as soon as
his eyes had opened.
And more then anything he wanted
to feel that way again.
~This is a way that I say I need
you~
~This is a way that I say I love
you~
~This is a way that I say I'm
yours~
~This is a way~
~This is a way~
In his mind it all happened like
a dream... like he was just an observer watching... hoping... seeing everyone
as they all focused on him, heard the mumbled phrases that were whispered among
the attendee's, saw the surprise and confusion in all their eyes... but none
more so then his three friends standing before him as he looked directly into
Stephanie's eyes and said the three words that would make or break him.
'I love you.'

His forehead creased... 'Man and

friend sealing both there fate's as he leaned forward to kiss the woman who had
promised to love and obey him till death they do part.
The physical pain he felt over
whelming him so much he had to grab hold of the pew as he and Lita followed the
newly weds out of the church towards there waiting limo.
The fake smile he had plastered
to his face dissolving as soon as she had leaned up to kiss him as they
prepared to leave. In that one moment he had closed his eyes and breathed in
the scent of her fearing she would have to pull away first because he didn't
think he had the strength too.
He was losing her... HAD lost her.
He remembered it like it was

Lita stood at the back door of
their home and watched her husband as he sat out on the deck and just stared
out at nothing.
He had changed... there was
something different about him and she was only just realising
it. She couldn't pinpoint when exactly this change had occurred but deep down
she knew it had sprouted from his time in hospital... the time he says an angel
had sat by his side, held his hand... whispered to him... looked over him till
she had arrived. From then on he had always had these closed off episodes where
he just liked to be by himself... and she allowed him that time... she had
known for along time that his wounds from that encounter weren’t just
physical... and that his heart still wept, though for what she didn't know...
and doubted she ever will.
He looked up then and saw her
standing in the doorway and he smiled lovingly at her... he had said goodbye to
Stephanie on the day of her wedding, wishing her luck with her marriage even as
he felt the loss of never having her in his life as he wanted her... she was
happy with Chris and her happiness was what mattered.
Lita was a beautiful caring
woman... she was his rock, his hold on life... to the life they would make
together.

Stephanie loved the night sky,
millions of twinkling stars that blanketed the darkness making it light up like
a giant Christmas tree.
Knowing that
somewhere out there 'He' too looked up at that same sky.
The scent of roses waffled up to
her tickling her sense's, reminding her of a time far gone... a time when she
knew a love so engulfing she thought she might die of want... yet now she knew
of another love... a lasting love that she and Chris had forged together.
She still thought of 'Him,' not a
day went by she didn't see his smile in her minds eye, didn't see the love and
happiness in his expression whenever he looked at Lita... she smiled to
herself, 'Those days are gone now and the past was just that... Past.'
She smiled warmly sensing his
approach and a few moments later felt his presence as his arms slipped around
her waist.
"Penny for your
thoughts..."
Her smile turned into a grin, her
own arms wrapping tenderly around herself overlapping his as she leaned back
into him resting the back of her head on his shoulder.
"Mmmm...
I was just thinking about the past... how one simple act can change your whole
life..."

Chris smiled as her words took
him back to the first time he had heard her sing. Even though he didn't know
who she was at the time he did know that that was the exact time he had fallen
in love with her.
He also knew deep down that at
the time her heart had belonged to someone else... but he tried not to dwell on
it even though it stayed there planted like a seed in the back of his mind.
She was right, that one night had
changed him forever... changed all of them... Stephanie, Lita, Edge and himself...
they're whole lives were altered and he liked to think for the best. His two
best friends had found love in the arms of each other and he had found
Stephanie.
He couldn’t help feeling a tiny
bit of sadness for the man she sang about in her song, but what he did know was
that man was now gone... and he, Chris Jericho, now held that place in her
heart.
